How to Set Up a WordPress Blog
Setting up a WordPress blog is fairly easy to do, even if you don’t know anything about blogging or WordPress. Following these simple steps will have you ready to use your WordPress blog in no time.
There are a lot of web hosting companies that you could use to host a WordPress blog on, but I use Host Gator, so that’s what this tutorial will use to explain how to set up a WordPress blog.
I am going to assume you already have an account. If not, sign up. It’s easy and painless. One of the two smaller plans will probably be just fine for your online business. You can always upgrade later if you need to.
Once you’re logged into your account, you’ll be on the Control Panel page. The first thing you want to do is scroll all the way to the bottom. On the left hand side you’ll see under Account Information where it says Name Servers. You need to put the name servers onto your domain name information. Assuming you bought your domain from GoDaddy, you’ll want to log into your GoDaddy account, then click My Account, then Domains/Domain Manager, then select the domain name, then under Nameservers click Set Nameservers. Select the last option that says ” I have specific nameservers for my domains.” and copy in the information from the Host Gator Control Panel that lists your name servers. Click Okay, and you’re done. It will take a few minutes for the name servers to set.
Now you’re ready to set up your WordPress blog. Host Gator uses Fantastico, which is software that allows you to easy install applications such as WordPress on your site. From your Host Gator Control Panel, scroll about 3/4 down the page and look under Software/Servers for the Fantastico icon button. It’s the blue smiley face. Click on this.
This will brings you to a page where you will look in the left column and click on the WordPress link. From here, in the main part of the page, click on the link that says New Installation.
Select the domain name that you will be installing WordPress on. Unless you plan on having a website and a separate blog on the site, you don’t need to put anything in the directory blank area. Leave it blank.
Next, decide on an administrator user name. Don’t use the word “admin”, as this makes your site more prone to hackers. and don’t use your domain name. Choose a password, and not something that’s super easy to guess. Keep up with your user name and password.
Next, put in your admin nickname. This is the name that will display on your blog posts as the author. You can always change this later. Use the name of the blog, your own name, your online business name, etc. Then enter the email address you want to use for the site. Finally, enter the name of the site. This will probably be the same as your domain name. You don’t have to enter a description. This can be done from the WordPress Dashboard later.
You’re done, so click Install WordPress. On the page that comes up, be sure everything is correct and click Finish. Usually your WordPress blog is ready to start customizing within a few seconds, but it can take a few hours for some web hosts. You can log into your WordPress blog at http://www.yourdomainname.com/wp-login.php (replace with your domain name). Log in by using the admin user name and password you chose for the site.
On the left side, you’ll see a box that says Settings. Within that box, you’ll find multiple options that you can tweak, including after you add optional WordPress plugins.
We’ll cover how to set up the various WordPress plugins and tweak your templates, etc. in other blog posts.
