How to Set Up a WordPress Blog

by Online Freelance Business

How to Set Up a WordPress Blog

Setting up a WordPress blog is fairly easy to do, even if you don’t know anything about blogging or WordPress. Following these simple steps will have you ready to use your WordPress blog in no time.

There are a lot of web hosting companies that you could use to host a WordPress blog on, but I use Host Gator, so that’s what this tutorial will use to explain how to set up a WordPress blog.

I am going to assume you already have an account. If not, sign up. It’s easy and painless. One of the two smaller plans will probably be just fine for your online business. You can always upgrade later if you need to.

Once you’re logged into your account, you’ll be on the Control Panel page. The first thing you want to do is scroll all the way to the bottom. On the left hand side you’ll see under Account Information where it says Name Servers. You need to put the name servers onto your domain name information. Assuming you bought your domain from GoDaddy, you’ll want to log into your GoDaddy account, then click My Account, then Domains/Domain Manager, then select the domain name, then under Nameservers click Set Nameservers. Select the last option that says ” I have specific nameservers for my domains.” and copy in the information from the Host Gator Control Panel that lists your name servers. Click Okay, and you’re done. It will take a few minutes for the name servers to set.

Now you’re ready to set up your WordPress blog. Host Gator uses Fantastico, which is software that allows you to easy install applications such as WordPress on your site. From your Host Gator Control Panel, scroll about 3/4 down the page and look under Software/Servers for the Fantastico icon button. It’s the blue smiley face. Click on this.

This will brings you to a page where you will look in the left column and click on the WordPress link. From here, in the main part of the page, click on the link that says New Installation.

Select the domain name that you will be installing WordPress on. Unless you plan on having a website and a separate blog on the site, you don’t need to put anything in the directory blank area. Leave it blank.

Next, decide on an administrator user name. Don’t use the word “admin”, as this makes your site more prone to hackers. and don’t use your domain name. Choose a password, and not something that’s super easy to guess. Keep up with your user name and password.

Next, put in your admin nickname. This is the name that will display on your blog posts as the author. You can always change this later. Use the name of the blog, your own name, your online business name, etc. Then enter the email address you want to use for the site. Finally, enter the name of the site. This will probably be the same as your domain name. You don’t have to enter a description. This can be done from the WordPress Dashboard later.

You’re done, so click Install WordPress. On the page that comes up, be sure everything is correct and click Finish. Usually your WordPress blog is ready to start customizing within a few seconds, but it can take a few hours for some web hosts. You can log into your WordPress blog at http://www.yourdomainname.com/wp-login.php (replace with your domain name). Log in by using the admin user name and password you chose for the site.

On the left side, you’ll see a box that says Settings. Within that box, you’ll find multiple options that you can tweak, including after you add optional WordPress plugins.

We’ll cover how to set up the various WordPress plugins and tweak your templates, etc. in other blog posts.

The Importance of Buying a Good Domain Name

by Online Freelance Business

The Importance of Buying a Good Domain Name

If you’re going to work online and have an online business, you need a good domain name. A domain name says who you are and what your online business is. It’s like a virtual ID card. It speaks for you and speaks volumes about your business and work.

A lot of people mistakenly think that having just any domain name is okay, or that having a bad domain name is better than not having any domain name at all. They would be wrong.

You want your domain name to look and sound professional. First, you don’t want vulgar words. You don’t want a misspelled domain name (that screams unprofessional). Having a bad domain name can ultimately backfire on you and cause you to lose customers and potential customers. The easy way around this is to buy a good domain name to begin with.

You want your domain name to rank high in the search engines. For this to happen, you want quality content, but you also want a domain name that reflects what your business is about so as to take advantage of the keywords in the domain name. Unless you are a huge company that’s very well branded (or perhaps you’re dreaming big and hope to be so), then the cute brandable names should be a second choice when thinking of a domain name. This isn’t to say don’t buy a brandable domain name (I have a few myself), it simply means think about what your site is going to be about buy accordingly.

Remember that your domain name won’t just be on the web for people to see, but it will be on your business letterheads, your business cards, your envelopes – offline as well as online – and more so if you do a lot of offline business. You want a domain name that touts professionalism and reflects your business in a positive manner.

Now you’re ready to make a list of possible domain names for your siteor sites. If you’ve named your business, you might want to buy the domain name for it. If that’s taken, you might consider changing your business name to a domain name that is available. You might also consider buying the domain name for your name. As for your online business, think of a domain name thaat pertains to what you’re doing or planning on doing. If you plan on selling woodworking plans, look for a domain name that had those words in it. Searching expired domain names (previously owned domains that are available now) can land you a super good domain (or a few).

In general, when buying domain names, you want to hang with a .com extention when possible. The .com extention is the most popular of all the extentions you can buy for a domain name. But the other extentions are okay if you can’t find a good .com domain name extention. Using good keywords and SEO techniques will help your site in the search engines.

While making your domain name list, remember to use a keyword or two for what your site is about. Once you’ve come up with a few ideas, mark out anything that’s too long or too hard to be remembered. You want to stay under 20 characters, preferrably 15 or less. Don’t use numbers, and stay away from hyphens. Also be sure that, when put together, your domain name doesn’t accidently spell out an offensive or vulgar word.

Once you have your domain list, reorder them putting your favorites first. You can check for domain name history by going to the Way Back Machine. Now you’re ready to see if the domain you want is available. There are a lot of places you can buy domain names, but my favorite (that I’ve used for 11 years) is GoDaddy. The process is fairly simple. Once you find a domain name that’s available, add it to the cart and check out. You’re now the proud owner of a domain name!

We’ll cover web hosting and how to set it up in another blog post.

Who’s Starting an Online Business?

by Online Freelance Business

Who’s Starting an Online Business?

With the economy still in bad shape, a lot of people are looking to the internet to work at home online, make money online, and have an online business. Starting an online business is one of the smartest moves you can make to invest in your future. Now more than ever, people are putting their ideas into practice and becoming first time entrepreneurs.

Working at home online and having an online business is much easier than it was just a few years ago. Booming online businesses make up a huge percent of products sold today. It’s safe to say that online business and ecommerce is here to stay.

One of the main perks of starting and having an online business is that the start up costs are very low. You can get started without having to come up with a load of money. The main two things you need to get started are a domain name and web hosting for the domain. Don’t worry – we’ll talk about how to do all of this as we go!

It doesn’t matter how old you are or where you live – people of all ages and locations can work online and create an online business doing what they love and are passionate about. Whether it’s writing books, selling services, creating content for sites, selling crafts, running a recipe site, doing graphic work, freelancing your talents out, telling others how to build chicken coops… there are just so many possibilities!

Many of the people who are first time entrepreneurs are moms. Whether they’re stay at home moms or currently working outside the home, mothers make up a large majority of those running an online business. But with the state of the economy and so many people out of work, more and more men are turning to the internet to make money online and have an online business by working online.

While it’s true that the economy is the reason a lot of people are wanting to do online business, some people are just fed up with the 9 to 5 grind. They’re tired of being gone all the time away from their family, tired of working for someone else, etc. They want to be home more, be their own boss, make their own money, get credit for their own ideas… the list goes on and on. So they gather their experience and expertise and take the plunge – and they start their own online business.

Let’s face it. Life isn’t fair! It’s not fair that a person has worked 30 years and gets laid off. It’s not fair that the younger people get hired for much less. It’s not fair when you’ve got bills to pay and kids to feed and something happens that changes your income – a death, divorce, an accident, a lay off. But these things happen and we have to deal with them. Things that happen in life can be the springboard that catapults you into an adventure that can bring so much good into your life as you start working for yourself.

Everyone knows about something… probably a lot of somethings… that can most likely be turned into a way to make money online. Ladies that have never worked outside the home probably know about cooking (recipes), crafts, sewing, gardening, cleaning, organizing, homeschooling, pets and pet care, shopping, coupons, movies, books, etc. You get the idea.

Making the move from working all day to being home all day can be quite an adjustment. Working for yourself and starting an online business can certainly make the adjustment much easier. Besides the obvious income advantage, it gives a person purpose and something to keep busy.

Online Freelance Business -  Online Business, Work at Home Online

Online Freelance Business offers information, tips, help, and resources about online business for those who work at home online or want to have do online business.

What we are NOT: We are not about getting rich or telling you that you’ll make gobs of money if you do this or that.

My name is Cindy Thomas, and I’ve been working online since 2000.  It’s been a learning experience. When I started out, I didn’t have any money to spend on this or that. I didn’t even know how to buy a website, let alone run one or make money with one (or anything else online for that matter).

Over the years, I’ve made from very little in a month to thousands of dollars per month. I have never been out to make a load of money, only enough to get by on, pay the bills, save some money when I can, and live. I wanted to be home with my kids as they were growing up (plus we were homeschooling) and help supplement my husband’s disability income (and anyone on that knows it’s not enough to live on), so working at home online seemed like the perfect solution.

I’ve had so many people over the years ask my how I make money online.  I have done so much, constantly trying to improve what I was doing, that it was just difficult to try and explain to someone what I did to make money online.  I’ve been wanting to do something for a long time to try and help others who want to work online, but didn’t know what to do or even how to get started.

And so here we are!  My goal with this blog is to pay it forward – to give back and try to help others.
